The segment's elder statesman, the 2023 Toyota 4Runner is one of the remaining mid-size SUVs that continues to live up to its reputation for toughness. The boxed fenders and high beltline still give it a tough image even if it has mostly kept its original design. This is reflected in its sturdy ladder frame and strong V6 engine, which are terrific for tackling terrain, especially with the lineup's various off-road-ready models, but less great for refinement and fuel economy. The 4Runner's tall and boxy shape gives the cabin and cargo area plenty of space, but the inside components seem and feel low-quality. with a number of common driver assistance features, including as lane-keeping assistance and adaptive cruise control.
